Post KKK Turbochargers

is there any place that sells parts or rebuild these ? .

I don't think the waste gate on my '85 gray market 300TD is working properly ~ it runs fine but power has dropped off a bit .

No, not a wisp of smoke ever but when first I bought this car it ran like a scalded cat .

TIA,

Make sure the Banjo Bolt at the rear of the intake manifold is not plugged and the hose/tubing from their to the ADLA on top of the Fuel Injection Pump is open.

Not hard to check your turbo boost pressure. T into the line that goes to the ALDA and you can get a free rental fuel pump gauge from places like Autozone. They are a combination fuel pressure and vacuum Gauge. Should have vrom 10-12 psi when you rev it up. If you have long enough hose you can put the gauge inside and go for a ride.

Generically loss of power on Diesel Engines calls for the Fuel Filter to be changed. If that does not work swapping the positions of the Fuel Inlet Hose with the Fuel outlet hose and having at least 1/2 tank of fuel will tell you if your Fuel Tank Screen is plugged. Swapping the position of the hoses is only for the test and bypasses the Fuel Tank Screen.

Then there is a plugged or restricted fuel tank vent. Better if you only have one half a tank of fuel because you remove the fuel fill cap and drive with it off. If the problem goes away it is an issue with your fuel tank vent.

In this last 2 year people have been having the linkage pivot on the fire wall fail. When it fails it can effect you acceleration.

Finally to the waste gate. If you are not getting boost pressure but not enough on the Garrette's the waste gate spring is adjustable; I don't know if that is the same on the KKKs.

If the wastegate cannot be adjusted people have been putting in a boost controller into the hose from the intake manifold to the wastegate. The controller is essentially a pressure valve with an adjustable spring. It won't let manifold pressure get to your wastegate till till the controller opens.

There is bearing and seal kits for the KKKs. Other parts I don't know about. Ebay has the bearing kits and there is sellers mentioned in other threads.

Thumbs up

Thank you Sir ! .

The KKK turbo has an external waste gate adjustment .

I'll go look at that banjo bolt, I'd forgotten that basic thing to check .

The KKK turbo is slightly smaller and so spools up *much* faster .

Even still, its horribly obsolete, inefficient with very high shaft mass. Anyone with the drive and means to upgrade their turbo should switch to an HE200 or GT22. They will spool FAR quicker, heat the air less at the same boost pressure and your wheel horsepower will measurably increase with no changes to the fuel side.

The HE200 for example with a 5.5cm turbine will lower your torque peak from 2400rpm to 2000rpm. BIG difference in city driving.

Google found a few for an OM617.952 engine. Need the right variant of the turbo and much customization, but a company sells adapter parts now. A pricey upgrade.

Post Turbos

THANK YOU for the replies and up grade ideas .

I was very happy with the original KKK turbo on this car and only want to maintain it properly, sooner or later I'll sell it on and the sales value will be highest with every thing as original as I can keep it .

FWIW, the original KKK turbo wasn't inefficient in any way, the car out ran my coupe easily and still gave excellent fuel economy .

I was hoping some here would know about these and share informati0n...

The adjustment is fairly simple on those but I recall having to do it by feel. A lock nut maybe 10mm and an Allen key to increase the boost. That's about all I recall.

That's it ! I have to rig up a boost gauge first .

The 240D is down so that takes precedence .

Post Waste Gate Adjusting

The Garret T3 one is hard to look at as you're adjusting it, I hate that little coiled flat spring ~ some times I'll think I have it in place then it pops out again....

I thought maybe the KKK adjustment would be easier done with the car on jack stands .
