Anybody recognize this electrical fitting on top of the OM603 IP?

More to the point, anyone know the name of it?

I pulled the IP pump on my currently dead SDL and with this fitting, I first popped off a little cap thingy. Then I realized that had not been needed, it just pulls of the the 3 pins it sits on. Bad news is I didn't immediately put the cap back on, can't find it now, and its absense enabled the three prongs to come loose from the body of the connector.

Those of you who saw my thread about maybe putting a much newer drivetrain into my SDL might have guessed that I wouldn't be able to resist the lure (I'll post on that thread soon) so my buddy is going to be reattaching that line to the new IP. No good way to know which wire goes where. Maybe he could suss that out, but I'd like to do it first, it's not a trivia item he needs to deal with. I'll keep an eye out for a boneyard 603, not that common. There's an '87 300TDT with a 603 in Richmond, but it's been there since January. Who knows, I might get lucky, if it's the same fitting would have the same colored wire, I could just solder it in.

Here's an IP pic I found with photo of terminal, for another perspective:

Rack position sensor not required if you do an egr delete.

Diseasel300 06-06-2021 11:27 PM

As mentioned above, it's the rack position sensor. It is solely used for EGR control. If your EGR is blocked off (and it should be on these engines), the rack position sensor is entirely pointless.

Thanks for that. Busy few days, just now saw this. It's mostly good news, I say mostly as my mechanic buddy is not big on the EGR delete. I'll ask him again for his reasoning, I didn't understand it well enough to regurgitate it, in short he thinks it causes problems. Not really sure how it could, feeding exhaust gasses back into the combustion process seems like sort of a contrived idea, though I do understand why it's done.

I have the parts on the old engine, I'll take those off today, taking it in to him soon. I showed a pic of the bypass to the long self-exiled Zeitgeist and he got a kick out of it. Looks a tad crude but the welds are pretty. I know in plumbing, avoiding copious right angle turns is to be desired - slows flow somewhat. I use 45s whenever possible. Not sure the principle would apply in a meaningful way in the flow of gasses but I could imagine it might.

Not sure what I'm going to tell him. I could always add the delete hardware later, but getting it out the door w/o that fitting might be a problem.

I'll check the 124 with 603 at the Richmond P-n-P in a couple of days. It's been there awhile but hard to imagine this fitting would be a highly sought item.

While looking for the link on my Post Image account I saw this pic from 2017 shortly after I bought it. If I fix the two problem spots on the passenger side, will be sort of a cherry.

One of the more worrisome parts about this car was the bad tranny seals and the likely toll it had taken on the tranny. Making some odd noise. I have some cherry 300SD front seat skins in the right color, that and renewing the front end, I suspect the suspension needs some help, I know the steering does would make this a fairly happening car.

Looks great. Curious as to why the insulation shielding is missing from the trap ox bypass pipe as shown on your feeding the turbo? Did you remove that, or acquire it that way? Not sure what the impact if any is to either underhood temps or turbo spool up, but first time I had seen that pipe as to what it looks like without the shielding.

Trivia note, I was doing some more searching, found this thread wherein some Peach Partiers spoke of the difficulty in getting that fitting off. Gives me some consolation that others had difficulty with its removal.

This is useful to hear as it all happened before me. I never met the longtime 1st owner. A sort of broker guy, semi well known in MB/Porsche circles, acquired it from the family in Oregon, gave it a facelift and put it on Craigslist which is where I found it. The vacuum shutoff valve was faulty in some way, the owner, a woman getting on some in years, wearied of needing to open the hood in order to shut it off and gave it to her sons to play with. Perhaps they performed the delete, not sure.

He, the broker, told me that her mechanic couldn't fix the shutoff issue. Makes me wonder what else he couldn't do. Nonetheless, overall condition wasn't bad.

What do you think would be a good fix did I add that bypass pipe to the new engine? I guess I could insulate the hell out of that pipe and the union. I'd have to research the type of insulation needed.

Diseasel300 06-08-2021 01:23 PM

Why not just get a real bypass pipe from a 49 states car? It's already sized correctly and has the insulation wrap. The loss of insulation on that pipe is costing you dearly in turbo performance and underhood temps. The exhaust design on these engines is already profoundly stupid.

87tdwagen 06-08-2021 02:50 PM

Agree with Diseasel300's recommendation, if you can find a 49 state bypass pipe with the insulation in good shape, would be a good swap. If you are having difficulty in locating one, or until you do, you could use exhaust/header wrap in the interim. Commonly available, inexpensive and easy to DYI, plus you should have ample space to wrap in place.

The increased insulation will help both keep underhood temps at bay, and also improve your turbo spool up time.

Good information. I'm not familiar with 49 state v. Cal., in actual hands on experience anyway. The car was shipped to the dealer in Redding, CA and at some point the family moved to OR. No idea about when and where they did the trap oxidizer recall/delete thing.

Are you saying the legal 49 state version is similar to a EGR delete? Or actually so? I see in this photo what looks like some sort of insulating coating that's missing on mine. This being the newish engine about to invade my car.

Almost seems like a good welder could cut at the smallish gray neck just to the left of the EGR and cap it, netting a decent, insulated bypass.

Diseasel300 06-08-2021 06:10 PM

49 states cars had EGR, but no trap oxidizer. The engine in your picture shows the 49 state "Federal" bypass pipe for the trap ox. Unplug the vacuum line to the EGR (or insert a BB into the vacuum nipple) and the EGR is disabled. No muss, no fuss. No "emissions" guys whining that you deleted equipment.

BillGrissom 06-08-2021 06:26 PM

Too bad you don't live in LA since you could rent out your M-B for movies. The Netflix series "Narcos" had many 1970-80's M-B driven by the drug lords.

cmac2012 06-09-2021 05:13 AM

Hah! That does have the look of luxury in that shot.

The car was originally burgundy color. You can see it in the engine bay and couple of dinged spots. Not sure if that silver/gray skirt thing is a different shade than cars born white at the factory.

Dang, that's good to know. I have a feeling I'll be exploring that further.
