84 300d no 4th gear

Greetings All

Back working on my 1984 300D, a project I started 5 years ago and then set aside for a couple of years.

I did have rough shifts but some work on the vacuum system put that in order.

Now when I start off in Drive, I get three very smooth shifts under 30MPH - which I thought would have me in 4th gear. But on the freeway at 55MPH I am showing 3100RPM. This would seem to indicate that I am in 3rd gear rather than 4th. I suspect it might be my shifter gear because it's a little loose so I will be replacing the 2 bushings below

Any thoughts as to why I don't seem to be getting 4th - and what to do about it?

All help appreciated.

Have you tried moving shifter up to N when this happens? That may confirm your bushing idea, or if it actually goes into neutral, it might find 4th gear when you shift back down to D. My 85TD used to hang in 3rd gear in cold weather and I found that shifting up to N on the road and letting the engine drop to idle before moving the shifter back to D would help it.
After changing the fluid mine quit hanging in 3rd.

If there are three shifts, the trans is in fourth.
Clean off the back of the rear end center section (aka differential); on the lower left corner next to the cover the ratio is stamped into the main housing. What is it?

Post As Mentioned

If you feel three shifts it's in fourth gear .

Easy enough to test at 40 MPH , part throttle, shift from D into S .....

Once you properly adjust the operating pressure on a hot tranny, the vacuum adjustment is dead easy , just remove the plastic cover cap and drive it and stop to adjust until you like how & when it shifts .

I'm confused .... If the car is starting out in 2nd gear, how could there be 3 shifts? When does a normally operating automatic "start out in 2nd"? If he's starting in 2nd, and gets 3 more shifts, he's got a 5 speed. I must be missing something.....

Post 1st Gear Start

It depends on you year the car was produced ~ mid 1981 they began starting off in first gear, prior to that the started in second .

They don't remain in first very long, maybe 20' .
