How 300D fan-switches get destroyed
Well this is a story about an '84 Euro 300D with manual HVAC, and how its' stupid previous owner 'fixed' it!
300D manages to survive 36 years. So of course the grease inside the fresh-air vent cable to the fan-switch dries up and turns to glue. Stupid PO forces the fan knob to turn, stripping it. Stupid PO pulls off knob and attempts to turn shaft with pliers, destroying it along with the bulb & socket. Stupid PO attempts to remove the HVAC controls and breaks several more parts. Stupid PO sells the car to my friend Mike. So Mike got a new fan switch and a used knob, which I installed today, assembling the HVAC controls well enough to operate all functions. I also lubed that vent-cable liberally with ATF, turning the glue back into grease, so it also functions normally now. But it needs the three round plastic sockets that are secured by the three nuts behind the knobs, to attach the outer HVAC panel to the three rotary controls. Anyone know if these are still available or where to find them? Thanks, Mark D. PS: With the HVAC controls now functining, I discovered the AC is actually working / blowing cold in the old girl! :-)
