Urgent W124 diesel windscreen help

Hi guys,

I have a 1989 300D that needs a new windscreen.

It has gone in to get the glass repair done and they say that the one in my car has a cowling retainer and the one they ordered in the picture doesn’t.

Now they say they can’t get the screen with a retainer in.

I had a look at my screen and it appears identical apart from this crusty piece of rubber that is attached to the bottom centre of the screen below the wiper motor.

Can I do With out this and still fit the screen in the picture ? I can’t see why not and I have read before that you could still fit them ?
I just got the feeling that they didn’t want to do the job after seeing there was more work involved with these cars with the wiper etc….

That plastic piece is required for your car because the lower gasket of the windscreen is held with it.

If you are in USA, I believe its available - there was a thread on this forum where a member bought one brand new from summit or jegs or jcwhitney as he was also in the same trouble.

Here is the posting.

95 e300d, moulding below windshield that windshield&wiper rubber seal snaps into?

also try to get the shop to snap some pictures, a 1989 year W124 would not have that retainer as it was used in later models (post 1992). Unless someone changed parts on your car in the past. The early W124 had plastic trays there and a rubber gasket on the glass.

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry I made a mistake. My current glass does not have the rubber retainer at the bottom however the glass place ordered one with it at the bottom.

I believe this is only there to hold the rubber strips at the bottom for the facelift.

From what I can see it will still fit the pre facelift as they have mouldings that don’t fit into the glass at the bottom?

Would this be correct ?

As they say they can’t get a glass for my 89 anywhere.

I’m not in the US. In New Zealand

Then your problem is already solved.

That plastic retainer for the later models is removable as its glued on, the glass guys should be able to snap it off and tear it off from where the glue is holding. The older model had a soft rubber gasket that is attached to the glass and is available pretty easily from MB and a lot of generic ones can be used to replace the original MB part.
