82 300D Rear Bumper Rubber Strip

I havea question about the rubber strip on the w123 sedan...

What makes is start to fall out?

I noticed this happening on my car. There are "L" shaped fasteners in the rubber portion. This strip does not have any cracks in it. It will push back into the bumper, but does not stay put after a drive.

How do I fix this?

Thanks!

Screws huh? I guess from the inside of the bumper...more crawling under the car...

I guess I can remove one and take it to a parts house or Fastenal.

Thanks!

See this:
W123 rear bumper rubber trim

There are two pieces of hard plastic that need to be held in place, then the rubber strip can be installed.

Ok, looks like I need to do some work from inside the bumper, as the L shaped pieces are in really good shape.

Thanks guys!

I am having the same problem I guess. My rear bumper rub strip (and the inside plastic runner) has popped out of its holes in the bumper in the middle. It's still anchored at each end... so I have this sort of saggy butt thing going off my bumper.

Or if you prefer my bumper rub strip is giving the butt end of the car a crooked smile....

My left plastic runner is fine. The right one was cracked and loose so I replaced it.

So I need to put some screws in to securely hold the runner in place?

I dont know what yall mean by plastic retainer--runner, they just got tabs that go into the slots in the bumper as far as I know. when the tabs break--its screw time. just dont drill all the way thur to the face of the strip

That is what I'm calling a runner -- the plastic piece that holds the rub strip in place.

None of my tabs are broken off. And the right side is brand new, just installed. But the whole shebang popped out of place and is drooping down.

The two plastic pieces fit into the slots, the "L" part and need to be held away from each other while the rubber strip is installed on those plastic pieces.

How does one hold the pieces away from one another once the rubber strip is being installed? You mean reach up inside the bumper and hold it in place while pushing the rubber strip on?

Somewhere here I've posted pics. I used kite string to tie each side tightly away from each other, which allowed me to get the rubber strip on.

I can't upload a pic now and the previous pics don't show that.

No need to screw them in (this applies for the later model W123 bumpers w/ plastic rails).

What I did was crawl underneath and push the L shaped tabs back into place using an L-shaped long nose pliers. The plastic rails need to be fastened in between as mentioned and this should hold the rails together. When one of the rails slips laterally the L shaped mounts slip out and you get the sagging impact strips.

Screws help

After chronic issues with this, I decided to use screws to more firmly attach the plastic strip. With the strip off the car, I drilled small pilot holes in each L bracket, perpendicular to the L (and the strip). Then I inserted the plastic strip on the bumper. From underneath the car, I inserted small screws into the pilot holes, again perpendicular to the strip/bumper. You don't have much room to work with, but the screws should be long enough to really lock the L in place, and prevent it from slipping out through the holes in the bumper.

This is a knucklebuster, but it has worked for me. 2+ years since this improvement, and no problems.

Drill a small vertical hole in each L-bracket. Thread a wire though both to tie them together. this will prevent the L-brackets from sliding. See attached picture
