@merc:
Mine has a right angle fitting that was necessary. I'll look the next time I'm in the shop. I don't remember what the tester was supposed to fit but know that It had a right angle fitting and several others that were useful. The right angle was necessary for the 85TD.

for the MB pressure adjustment, I used the manual on p2scho's website and made a kit myself from a scrapped banjo bolt and a generic pressure gauge. (love to tinker) and I think Ive used it on quite a few cars. But as you said first order is to have fresh ATF at the correct level first. Tired ATF will throw off the pressure.

Good to hear someone who actually understands being a Mechanic !
![]() Anyway, You need to know more than just 722. ~ that's the basic W123 slushbox, my OM616 powered 240D has a 722.11? (Sorry, I forget) and for sure it's not the same as used in the 5 cylinder OM617 cars . It's been a while since I did this but not only the ATF needs to be clean and fresh (ALL of it, not just the tranny !) the filter too *MUST* be changed out you're flubbing your dub here . I tried to share my pressure adjustments here but the damned board won't allow me to upload anything, God alone knows why not but as mentioned, instead of listening to me b*tch & moan, go look got older posts and choose the ones that have attachments . DO NOTHING UNTIL YOU'VE RAISED THE CAR UP AND WIPED OFF THE PASSENGERS SIDE LIP OF THE TRANNY AND JOTTED DOWN WHAT NUMBER IT IS ! .

OK, I purchased the harbor freight transmission pressure tester kit (less money that Kent's vacuum testing kits.....). I'm going to take VWNate's advice and drain the transmission and torque converter FIRST then change the fluid. I'm going to refill with Amsoil Signature synethetic transmission fluid..... in over 30 years, Amsoil has NEVER let me down.....I am WAY over due for a fluid change; I'll take photos of the pan when I drop it and post them here......

I would adjust it and see what the result is before draining the trans. You have nothing to lose and it's easy to adjust. If things don't work out, then drain.
Draining raises the question of what trans fluid. Threads say some fluids work better than others. One of my 617 cars has a 722.303. The other has a 722.315. I forget which is which. 85SD and 85TD. I couldn't find the specific pressure for those exact transmissions so use a ballpark number from a transmission manual listing specs for a green modulator. It worked at least it's been a while and hasn't failed (yet).

Don't forget to CHANGE THE FILTER TOO ! .
I'd like to see pictures of the H.F. kit up close, I have no idea what fitting is used, certainly NOT A TAPER THREADED FITTING ! ![]() Take you time and don't rush . Remember to clean really well around the test port BEFORE you remove the plug ! . The test plug is 12MM ATF and I only use 6 point sockets on them .

Thank you VWnate, will do. I'll see if I can take some photos of the HF kit and post them here. Even if the HF kit doesn't have all the correct connectors, I figure either Home Depot or Lowes will most likely have them......

Please do lay all the various pieces out on a flat surface like a light colored towel or old bed sheet so we can really clearly see what you've got .
I've been busy with endless Doctor's appointments else I'd replied sooner and maybe looked for the transmission series number you need or at least a picture so you'll understand what you're looking for and where .

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've been using the search tool!
Was it ever confirmed that the HF pressure tester kit was kosher for our cars? My '85 300D was running like a top for the first half of today, then decided when I came out of Home Depot that it simply did not want to go in to any gear anymore. Trans was rebuilt about 7 year/ 20-30k miles ago and reinstalled by Jono. I shot him a text about it this afternoon, he advised to check fluid. Fluid was super low, so I added a quart and it's not on the top side of perfect. Still no go. Next suggestion was to test the pressure of the pump, which I believe is referred to in the manuals as 'working pressure' or 'operating pressure'. Should be a port on the PS side of the trans. If the kit was good, I will pick one up for myself tomorrow. |
