1982 Om617 300CD Motor mounts lasted only one month

I had a mechanic replace the motor mounts and that little shock absorber thing that goes with them a month ago. Car started shaking today. So, I took it back in to have them look at them. They tell me the new months are already shot! How could this be? What else causes these to go bad quickly?

You want to carefully check to see if any diesel fuel is leaking down onto the motor mounts. Take your shop light and look carefully when the engine is running and see if you can see diesel fuel leaking..... Motor mounts tend to degrade if diesel fuel is leaking on them.......

Were the mounts Lemfoerder brand or sourced from MB? Most other brands typically don't last long. Also, does your engine shake excessively?

I don't know the brand. Are some brands worse than others?
Both sides are shot after only one month. I don't see any diesel on the left mount. But, I don't think that would explain the right one being shot too.

Lemfoerder is the OE supplier to MB. They're regarded as the best brand for motor mounts and going with them or dealer sourced mounts is considered the best way to go. Other brands tend to not last as long, though some people have had good luck with Corteco.

Andectotally, but not surprising I've heard that the Uro mounts are very short-lived. However, 1 month is excessive. Can you post a photo of the mounts so we can see them?

Somewhere between 2007 into 2008 I replaced the Motor and transmission mounts with as it turned out URO mounts. The ones from that time period lasted 5 years.

That was part of my campaign to get rid of as much idle shaking as possible.

Besides the shaking issue that was fixed the Transmission mount is an important part of the engine suspension. It makes kind of a triangle.

Output shaft Leakes have the ATF softening the transmission mount.

I found my thread.

It's hard to tell in the photo, but those do look pretty squished. Is it possible they installed the softer 240D mounts? I'm not even sure if they can be found anymore, but I suppose they could crush easily under the weight of a turbodiesel.

They look dry to me, still it might be good to check for diesel fuel leaks. Either way, if the car is shaking hard you need to replace them. And yes, if it were me I'd use Lemforder.

Pheonix is the OEM brand if you can find it. Lemforder would be my second choice.

They might not be necessary, but I'd add the heat shields that go on top of those mounts. Installing them might extend the life of the mounts a bit longer.

You may also consider using the motor mounts for the W116 6.9 as a HD option. It's the same physical mount using a harder rubber. The part number is 123-241-14-13. You'll want Genuine MB.

How is a 123 part number a HD option from a 116? If it was different, it would still have the 116 part number. What I'm saying is that it looks like it was superceded.
