little c shaped pipe next to thermostat rusted out.
A little c shaped pipe about 5 " long that was kind of rusty sprang a leak while i was hammering on the lower thermostat bolt, which of the 3, is (naturally) the only one frozen. No idea what this thing is called, or where to find one. It has a banjo type fitting on either end. (1981 240D)

Its a little coolant bleeder/bypass pipe to keep air out of the top of the water pump housing.

Thanx for that info
I coated the rust holes with JB weld, until i can get a new one. While it is out, i am going to struggle some more with the frozen thermostat bolt. Dosing it with WD 41 didn't help, now trying PB blaster, and will also hit it with a torch, being sure to melt my alternator belt that i just replaced.

When I bought a new one over 3 years ago they were $16 on eBay. Mine was made by Meyle.
Mine broke when I loosened one of the tiny banjo bolts. You are also going to need tiny 4 crush washers. The part number is at the bottom of the peachparts, listing 007603-008109 Seal Rings. (Banjo Pipe). I did not look up the price on peachparts but another source showed 89 source each. For that price I would be looking into an assortment box of copper crush washers. If your original washers are copper washers are not badly distorted, they can be heated red hot to soften them and maybe reused. Info from another site Description: 8x14x1mm; Copper Cross References:1006452, W01331644406 (the last number is a westpack number)

Update; temporary fix
Finally got the lower thermostat bolt loose, and it is amazing the old thermostat worked @ all, it was so crudded up! The bypass pipe had about 3 or 4 holes in it, but a generous coating of JB weld seems to have fixed that, until i get a new bypass pipe hopefully. Did not have the crush washers, but some old paper gaskets from my aircooled VW days seem to be working for the banjo bolts.
Idled about 20 minutes, and the temp gauge leveled off at 80C, and so far, no leaks. Thanks as always to the helpful forum folks! |

It sounds like your car desperately needs a Citric Acid flush .
That patched by-pass pipe is just waiting for the worst possible time to do you dirt .

flushing cooling system
I am doing several rinses of the cooling system, with a bottle of Prestone citrate radiator stuff. At first it came out really dark and choclatty as described in another thread. Running a little over 80 with the new thermostat.

There you go .
It takes longer than an hour to properly flush the system . I left it in overnight and drove it to work , wow how black the water turned .

Shout laundry additive
I read somewhere to add "Shout" to help with the cleaning process. Wondering how much, and how long to leave it in. I currently have about 20% no name antifreeze in there for the 4th rinse.

It's a bit late now, it only takes a little bit .
I foolishly use a liquid detergent and it foamed like crazy and took me days to get it all out . The idea is to remove the oils that leach from the rubber hoses before you begin . Fill the cooling system and look at the coolant in the filler neck ~ if there's any oil you'll see it floating .
