What's the largest bolt or nut I'm going to find on my '83 240D?
Yesterday I had to make a quick trip to the local hardware store to get a cheapie 27mm socket to bar the engine over with. I don't have a lot of metric tools, and don't really want to. Is that 27 the biggest I'm going to need?

27MM is the biggest except for the 4_ something MM open end wrenches on the driveshaft.
Good luck!!!

Thanks, Sugarbear. I won't worry about trying to get anything bigger, then. I had sockets up to 26, but I couldn't get that 26 to stretch.

I guess there’s also the 46mm should need to remove the tank screen and fuel sender.

Hope it's 32mm like the Subarus. I do have a 32 for them. You can probably see from the signature block that I favor older, non-metric machinery, but I do have a couple of late '90s Subies.

You'll never need it, but the steering box input shaft cover requires a 65mm.

For the nuts on the transmission output shaft/yoke, and rear end input shaft/yoke:
30mm-12 point. |

The biggest nut you'll find is the one sitting in the driver seat.

What "axle nut" is 30mm on a W123?

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it , if you get a deep socket 27 mm you don’t have to fight a small extension , the throw that the deep socket onto the wrench itself fits is just right between the fan and the pulleys , I usually extend one arm for the wrench then the other to slowly tap my finger to feel for the torque converters drain plug .

The largest socket in my HF deep impact set is 32 mm and I recall using it on my 1985 300D, perhaps the crankshaft bolt. I recall having to run out for a 12 pt large socket for the output nut on the transmission (1983 transmission I stripped for parts). I had to buy a special dbl-square male socket for the head bolts. The motor mounts require 6 and 12 mm hex Allen sockets as I recall. A set of open-ended wrenches is needed for some fittings, like the oil-cooler tube nuts. I have the long HF set w/ 26 mm max. I use the 22 mm box side on the p.s. pulley nut to turn the engine over by hand (start of injection timing and such). A 240D may differ.
