Messed up master cylinder install w124

I was not very careful while installing a new master cylinder on my 90 300d. I put in the new cylinder somehow without the plunger going into the correct spot on the master cylinder. When I went to pump the brakes, I heard a clunk and dirty fluid dripped down in the foot well. When I took out the master cylinder I realized my mistake, but now the plunger is separate from what it is supposed to attach to inside the booster to the pedal. I am looking at the metal rod and wondering if I can re attach it somehow, but I can't see where it is supposed to attach. Perhaps I may need a new booster too.
Does anyone know how this fits together and what parts I might need?
thanks!
