Found some om617 Turbodiesel Pistons??
Hi everyone.
I'm going start with a disclaimer, and that is I am new to this website, and to forums in general, and so someone please call me out if I am starting too many new threads, because I have started a couple recently, most of which I have had no responses to. Anyways, In my friends garage which he is cleaning out I have found a set of om617 pistons. Part Number 617-030-10-17. Of course I am thinking I hit the jackpot, because I am currently rebuilding my 85' OM617 turbodiesel, and I really do not want to re-use my old pistons, or use the aftermarket forged ones, which are the only available option these days. Researching this part, I have determined that they fit 84 - 85 om617s, however I am aware that the diesel and turbodiesel pistons are different. I quite simply do not know if these pistons are for the turbo, or N/A om617, or if they are interchangeable. If anyone either knows the answer, or could redirect me to another thread, or website, that would be fantastic. Thanks all! |

EPC has 617 030 18 17 as a turbo piston.
Replaced by 617 030 10 17. What you have is a turbo piston. Not that you need it, but here's what EPC has for the non turbo Piston standard 90.9mm -616 030 63 17 -replaced by 616 030 64 17 Piston repair size 91.5mm -617 030 19 17 Piston repair size 91.5mm -616 030 47 17

If new pistons, then you hit the jackpot since the turbo pistons became "not avail" most places many years ago, and the last I saw sell new on ebay were $550 each. Google finds 3 places listing them for $198 to $337 each, but when you order may get "not avail" as with many web sellers who don't actually stock what they list.
Someone with a Chevy small-block V-8 would snicker since they can get a set of 8 pistons for <$100 or even forged ones for turbo for $300/set. I googled and found the "forged racing pistons" you refer to. Looks like the offer began in Feb 2020. Appears they will be made to order if you order at $2015/set. Per a discussion I found, the photo is of cast pistons for a gas engine, and no word of anybody trying these new pistons yet or what they actually look like. Anybody with deep pockets who wants to play guinea pig? http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/showthread.php?tid=8402 I don't know what to make of the reply that "diesel ring grooves must be made of steel" since the pistons in my 1985 OM617.952 engine are just solid aluminum (don't know if forged). I tore it down after it failed. Several pistons had chunks missing at the ring grooves. Perhaps steel grooves would be better, but I don't see that M-B did that.
