1976 240d broken transmission

On the way home yesterday the transmission in my W115 240d died. There was a lot of metal in the pan so it’s toast for sure. There’s a ‘78 240 in a junkyard not too far from me and I was wondering if that trans would work in my car. I was told that 1972-1979 240d transmissions are all the same.

I believe it is a direct bolt in replacement. Look at any things that are different, linkages etc. and change them too.

Post Used Trannies

Look on the passenger side of the case just above the pan lip, stamped in will be the tranny's model number .

As there's SWARF (metal debris) the torque converter is bad too, try to get them both when you purchase the junkyard tranny and for sure change the filter _BEFORE_ you ever try it .

Drop the pan on the potential new transmission to inspect it for damage before removal.

Flush out the transmission cooler lines and cooler on your car before connecting to a replacement transmission.

Well the junkyard transmission was no good. Is it possible to put in a newer 240d transmission that has the vacuum modulator from say an ‘80-83?

Where are you located ? .

This should be part of your signature info, often some one will have what you need and reply because you're in the same general area .

The 1976 transmission is in the series 722.107/108/109. It has a mechanical control pressure linkage, with fixed modulating pressure (no vacuum).
The transmissions used in the 240Ds from 1977 onwards (in 123s) are 722.117s which have vacuum control only, but no mechanical control.
The 722.117 transmission can be used in the 115 chassis but will require all of the vacuum controls from the 123 chassis.
The 722.118/120 transmissions (W116 300SDs, W123 300Ds) could also be used; they have both mechanical control pressure linkage, and vacuum modulation, and would require installing all the vacuum controls.

The 722.3/4 type transmissions are not readily adapted to the 115 chassis.
