1976 240d broken transmission

On the way home yesterday the transmission in my W115 240d died. There was a lot of metal in the pan so it’s toast for sure. There’s a ‘78 240 in a junkyard not too far from me and I was wondering if that trans would work in my car. I was told that 1972-1979 240d transmissions are all the same.
