unknown sound 1980 300D

trying to determine what is making a squeaking/scraping sound. starts making sound after a few minutes running when the motor warms slightly. I've used a stethoscope to check PS pump, alternator, water pump, and vacuum pump but have not been able to find a source of the noise. noise sounds like it may be coming from the rear of engine compartment back towards where the engine and transmission meet.

have audio/video, but a 10 sec clip exceeds the maximum
uploadable size by about 10x

Is this a car with an automatic transmission?

Sounds like you need to safely raise the car and get under there with your stethoscope.

You can sometimes detect if a belt is causing the squeaking by pouring part of a glass of water on the belt. Do that from the front because the water is going to get flung to the sides.

yes it is automatic.

I have raised it and listened some underneath. that's how I came to the conclusion back of motor/front of transmission.

And i also tried the water on the belt trick, that didn't fix it either.

Ive found it next to impossible to pinpoint many sounds.

Does the engine mount soften with heat?

Does the engine have shocks? Are you sure you disconnected them before lifting to swap mounts? I’d suspect that a bad shock mount could squeak and be incredibly hard to find.

yes it has shocks. and I had to remove the nut and rubber cups to lift the motor.

something I forgot in the original post is that the sound directly corresponds to engine speed.

Its a daily driver so when I get the chance I intend to remove the belts one at a time and see if I can isolate a source. and can someone describe what injector ping/knock sounds like? Don't think its an injector but I don't know enough about them to know what it sounds like

I never did figure out out what was squeaking, after a few months it just disappeared so I'm no longer worrying about it.

Theseus owned a ship in Greek mythology, and when a part of the ship needed replacing, it was replaced. Eventually, everything was replaced. Is it the same ship? (I own the car of Theseus. )
