well the ac vacuum servo appears to have been replaced with the electronic box so that's a plus.

Motor and tranny, that price includes the cost of the units. It needs a tranny, and this would probably be the most reliable way to go turbo. Also, all seals will be examined/upgraded. I’ve never driven an NA 300D although my car had no turbo function for the first few months I had it. Not sure if that’s even worse than a fully NA vehicle. It was gutless, I’ll tell you that much

OK, you tell me, what do 300TDs go for when they have a cherry interior and a basically solid body? There is an extremely good chance this car would run well and be leak free for a long time. I think the addition of a paint job, maybe black would be the way to go would render it a primo edition.

The engine pics clearly show a non turbo. The front seats are wrong, from a newer car. This car is a polished turd.

Definitely non Turbo. The rusted our left front fender is a good indicator that the rust on the lower rockers is likely just a hint of what you’ll find. Nice job trying to hide it with some paint though. That lower door trim they are including is junk. Whoever took it off didn’t know what they were doing and broke the stud off the rear of it. You can see the remnants still attached to the door.
Bad transmission, sketchy AC, rust damage, questionable prior service, early U.S. spec TD. I would look elsewhere.

if I had a dollar for every person that thought the TD meant Turbo Diesel, I would be rich man.

Just my thoughts, Touring Diesel is not well know outside of MB circles.

The market and pricing for any W123 is pretty much a wildcard today in some regards.

W123s were a “dime-a-dozen” about a decade ago. It’s tough to find a parts car or what I call a drivable parts car for a grand anymore. The pristine survivors are rare anymore and they are fetching $$$$

If your friend loves the car then a suitable drivetrain will be $2-$3k. Forget a new tranny. Buy a known, dependable drivetrain and do the half-day swap

I’m not a wagon guy but what sort of wagon can you get for $8k. That’s your real benchmark. Is the wagon unique? Odd or rare options?

Yup. I glanced over it too quickly at first. The rust in this photo would be spotted in person right away.

The body looks pretty tight on this one (Portland area craigslist, I’ll be driving through in two weeks) unfortunately a lot of the rest of it is badly worn. My thought is at some point in the future this would look like a pretty good deal. Whether or not it would be a wise undertaking now is a more difficult question:

Both of these 300TD Wagon none turbo engines are just a 240D with one more cylinder.
If you want to change the Differential to a different gear ratio, better get the corresponding
Speedometer. They are geared together.

The Portland CL one looks like it was rode hard and put away wet.
A beater.

The rug is sure tore up on the passenger side. And is missing the carpet pieces that go
on top of the lower one`s.

They are both projects, and having the evil Servo, I would pass.

It is a challenging issue. The interior of the Portland car is very rough. On the other hand, the body is sweet and even most all of the chrome trim is intact and decent looking. I have seen so many 123s on the road with the trim beat to hell and missing.

What I need to find is a 123 with relatively low miles and perfect trim that was rear ended into a full total. I’m dreaming of course. Getting hold of one of those before the wrecking yards get them is tough.

Living in redwood City, you have access to several PNP yards.
2 in SJ, Oakland, Newark, Moss Landing, There is one north
of SF, forget the name.... and a few others.
Do a www.row52.com and search for the model or I sometimes
just search Mercedes. Searching 240D nothing come up, but 240
and several come up as an example.

The new molding is still available, probably mostly after market.
Some NOS is out there if you look.

I appreciate it, but I am an old hand at those yards. The South San Jose branch closed about a year ago. The only ones I go to on a regular basis are Newark, San Jose North (they still call it that even though the south branch is closed), Oakland and occasionally Richmond.

I’ve never made it to Moss Landing - I’ve been to the American Canyon yard and a couple of them in Sacramento a few times. On my drives south from Washington state, I’ve hit a couple in the Portland area, Chico, and I forget, a couple of others. Newark is generally the best of the bunch.

I just took a virtual tour and OMG, there are some decent looking W123s to be seen, what’s left of them.

I Have a friend that is an old MB Guy, around 86 now with declining health.
Put a Om617.952 in his 240 years ago, met him at Costco 10 years ago, we had our 80 240 with us.
His son had a 83 300 Turbo Diesel parked at work, parked on the street. Some idiot hit the L/R quarter panel, pushed it in with the Bumper, missed the whole left side. because the front wheels were turned to the right, guy hit the wheel and tore out the suspension on the L/F.

Calls me up, hey you want a free car? Was parked on the street in front of his house in Reno and they were going to impound the car. Took a look at it, clean car with NO Sun Roof, "5-spd" manual gear box, 8/10 dark brown interior, and 130K miles on it.
He and his Dad installed a Saab Intercooler and all the piping etc...
Went home thinking how I was going to get it on my Car Trailer with L/F on the ground.

Cals me 2 days later, after 4month insurance finally paid him $4200. Lost my free car.
It got hauled up to Copart north of Reno. But you can`t just go in a buy from them, have to go through a broker.
6 weeks later it was listed for $650. Long story, but went through a Broker and hauled it down here. $1650.

Worth taking a look at.

Iam pulling that engine and going to install in our 82 240D automatic.
That`s my plan anyway.

Once in a while you can find a Diamond in the rough at PNP. Our PNP in carson City doesn`t get many MB`s, but back in November was a 82 300D, dark maroon, but sat under a cypress tree for a long time. Pain was black and grungy as were front and rear glass. Interior was almost a 10, with "Leather" seats. Gutted the whole interior, Carpet and all. Cluster and Blower were so clean looked to have just come from the factory.
Pulled Diff and Axles. All 4 Door Checks were like new, and factory.

Was starting to grab the turbo etc... but a damed Virual thing knocked me down and car got crushed. Showed 142K on the spedo.

The trim was in pretty good condition.
OH, they forgot to poke holes in Fuel tank and got it too.

Closed the south PNP, interesting. That was an old wrecking yard from way back they took over.
Use to be a lot of independent yard when I was in High School. Got out in 62, and the Highway in front was 101, the main road, called Blood Ally back then before the freeway bypassed it all.

Use to be another yard, Pull your Part off Montigue off Trade Zone, use to have a 50% sale about every Month.
PNP bought them out and closed it. Got some good stuff out of there.
