300 SDL Battery

My well respected Mercedes mechaanic in Los Angeles says that the proper battery for the 300 SDL should have 850 Cold cranking ampss. A few parts supplierrs iist 740 CCA as sufficient, but from experience 740 wouldn't start my car, but 850 did. Any thoughts to clear up this confusion?
