Yeah that’s scary. But aren’t all ratcheting jackstands vulnerable if they aren’t under load?

The HF tools ones look particularly bad in the videos. But I have some old Allied brand ones from the 1980s and some recent Torin ones that look like you cannot trust them unless they are loaded.

This is pretty scary. I usually use a second stand or a backup jack (that doesn’t leak) when I’m under the car or when a wheel is off. I’ve heard enough stories about guys like us dying under cars.

When I first started using the ratcheting style I kind of recall an old timer warning me to make sure they were loaded up. He said if they weren’t you Could catch a cuff or a tool on that lever and release it. Now that I think back I think he showed me how to pop the pawl free by jamming a pry bar under the lever and pulling it up while the stand had a little load on it. Kind of like the video above where the guy kicks it out of under the trailer.

The videos show a poor tooth casting and locking pawl alinement on the recalled ones.

Are they all the same? See the attached picture. The set in the pic has safety pins. It came up when I searched Home Depot. I don't remember if Home Depot sells it in their store or it is just ordered through their stores.

None of mine that I could find have safety pins.

Sounds a tad bit short sighted. It was only yesterday I found out about the recall I have one set and maybe another one.

Since it is a safety issue. Not only might people still have them and are using them someone might buy some used ones at a YardSale or so no. The YardSale ones won't get you a new set or gift card but at least you will know they are unsafe.

Well, when I first started up with this forum the Mercedes Trapox as under recall and they were honoring that like many years.

The 2 of my harbor freight jacks stands that I found today are not of the recalled numbers.

Its a terrible world of cheap stuff from china.
Those manufacturers just change names of their companies
so they have no legal liability.

It's good to know to check those teeth, even if it's a gift (horse)

I may not be the brightest bulb but I'm very interested in not dying under my car. I'm curious about the under load/not under load comments. Folks are saying that a jackstand that's not under load is dangerous. Why?

I posted 2 videos. In one of them the guy put the jackstands under one end of an empty trailer. When he shook the trailer one jackstand failed. When he did the same on a vehicle and shook the vehicle both of the same stands held.

His conclusion was there was a greater chance to fail under a light load compared to a heavy load.

In the video the guy pulled up the jack stand a few teeth and shook the stand and the center of it dropped down. That was no load. Both stands did the same thing.

However, this is only about Harbor Freight jack stands. Some jack stand makers add cross pins that you can insert so moving the handle will not release the jack stands. From the pictures I haves seen most don't have the feature.

Someplace with in the forum threads there is a warning from a man who lost his son crushed under a vehicle. He said he believed that his son who was on a creeper scooted on the creeper and the creeper hit the locking handle and released the jack stand.
