Thumbs down EGR and hard shifting + smoke

Well I've noticed this for a while now.

If I have the EGR valve connected to the vacuum system the car would shift hard and blow a small amount of smoke (visible in the mirror). It would also shift hard.

now if I take it off the car would shift VERY VERY smoothly and precisely (right after). However after a while it would start shifting a lil harder but the smoke never came back.

Am I doing something wrong here? How is the line meant to be plugged?

I just plugged a screw in the line from the vacuum regulator. I also put another rubber piece to the EGR and put a screw in it as well.

How is it supposed to be done? I haven't tried the BB trick just because I can't find a BB... :p

Any suggestions and how could the shifting be affected?

Thanks
