83 300D Turbo Hood Pad

Found the hood pad at FastLane. Which should I be using, w/heat shield or W/O. This is a turbo. Current hood pad is just a memory. Thanks Much.

My understanding is that the pad with the heat shield is for the turbo cars, the others can get by without it.

not sure, but I used the no heat shield

I am not sure, but I used the no heat shield on my 300TD. It worked fine.

I think that the heat shield is supposed to be for the cars that have the trap oxidizer (85 and 87). That is just a guess.

But my SDL pad has a heat shield.

Call Phil at Fastlane. He's a wealth of knowledge and will know the answer.

I run the one without the shield on the 300D and it looks fine after a year and 1/2.

Anyone ever tried a coat of rubber undercoating underneath the hood pad? Would this help deaden more sound, or would it be a firehazzard?

haven't tried- suspect that it wouldn't help

My SDL is much quieter than my 300TD for a bunch of reasons, one of the main ones is that there is a sound insulation wall between the engine and the firewall.

They both use the same hood pad, indicating to me that the stock hood pad is sufficient for its purpose.

My thinking is that the source of most of the noise that you hear in the cabin is coming from the firewall, not the hood.

Some other poster created a sound encapusation system for his 300D and posted pics somewhere around here. The main part of that system involved isolating the engine from the firewall with a vertical curtain.
