I had to remove the IP on on 74 240 to set the timing after replacing broken timing chain (there is no external reference except the mark on the face of the IP ...) Long story short I had the remove the oil filter housing to access the lower IP bolt. I was having trouble removing the oill filter housing bolts so I removed the center bolt from the engine mount and raised the engine a couple of inches on the IP side to line up the oil filter housing bolts so that I could reach them with an extension from the wheel well(driver side wheel removed, you may have to do this a few times to get at all the bolts one at a time).
I am sure there may be a better way but this is my brute force method. Needless to say the oil filter setup on the 115 diesels could have been more "Friendlier". Hope this helps.
PS: This does add a a few $ for the housing gasket, I got mine from the delaer for about $3.
