Hood pad/noise insulation

The hood foam/insulation on my 84'300D turns to dust when you touch it. I have removed most of it and plan on sucking the rest off with a shopvac. Anyway, is this worth replacing? I am thinking it may help to quiet the engine noise a little? I know fastlane has 'em w/and w/out heatshield but I was also thinking maybe an aftermarket Dynamat sound shield? Anyone tried this? The car isn't real noisy but anything helps.... Thanks, RT

There are many posts on this subject...use the search.

The new ones with heat shield are for turbos and the ones without are for the non-turbos. The one on my 240D is long since dissolved away - one of these days I'm going to replace.

Good luck.

Worth it?

My 300d did not have a pad when I bought it. Didn't even know it came with one till I came to this forum
Anyway I replaced mine with quilted fiberglass. WOW what a difference it made not only outside the car, but inside as well. I'm sure the MB stock part is fine but as you see it will break down to dust in time. The quilted fiberglass stuff with the heat shield won't do this so it's a one time deal.

I think having the pad in place also helps to protect the paint on the hood from fading. (Maybe the heat makes whatever wax is on it go away quicker, resulting in the paint fading.)

For engine noise, I know of a product I saw on the internet once that may help. It was essentially a sound insulating insert that could be placed between the engine and the firewall on a 123. I just did a quick search on the internet and couldn't find it, though. I think the company was in Virginia and the product cost around $70 (three years ago). If anyone else has seen this product maybe they can post info.

Yes Its worth replacing. i did it this summer. A considerable dampening in sound. Also the pad will act as a heat shield and prevent the fading of hood on a long run. i got mine from a non dealer.

sflori: there is a shield offered on ebay from time to time and the guy's business website is www.psbproducts.com.

rebootit: where did you get the quilted fiberglas and how did you attach it?
