Have a 85 300D with 157K. Am interested in replacing transmission fluid. Two questions: can/should I do a transmission flush (like BG, etc) or just change it. Been told by one shop that they are reticent to flush an old transmission. But I listen to Pat Goss every weekend and he really talks up the flushes. Second question -- can/shoud I use synthetic ATF when I change? IF so, what about Mobil 1, or Castrol? Open to any ideas, just want to do what is best.

A personal opinion, but I think you are better off just to change the fluid now and keep changing it (and filter) regularly.
I'm sure the synthetic products are good, I just use Castrol ATF. Ken300D |

Ken 300D -- am also in Northern VA, who do you use for service?

So far I have used Ken300D exclusively for service.
![]() The few times I have needed parts from Mercedes rather than on-line I've gone to American Service Center in Arlington. Mercedes diesels are good, reliable, and inexpensive transportation vehicles as long as you don't have to go to the dealer for service. Ken300D |

I agree with ken300D. Use of a quality mineral ATF with regular fluid and filter changes is all your car askes. Unless you are driving in extreme environments, you may be wasting your money with the syths.
