Changing Tranny/Fluid

I am ready to change the tranny fluid/filter. A couple of questions:
1.) on the 1979 SD, does the pan require a new seal/gasket?
2.) what is the best tranny fluid to use? I prefer Mobil 1 synthetic products. What grade/rating is appropriate?
And please include any tips on how to do the best job possible.
