A/C Control Panel Removal 300SD

I imagine this is a simple task for most of you but I'm new to this and need some help on removing the A/C control unit and how to make sure I don't crack the wood face plate. I have replaced the blower motor and things worked well for about a week but then the air will blow when it wants to. I can mash the switches back and forth and it will come on eventually but it seems to be getting worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
