I once had the same kind of intermittent turn signal problem. After fooling around for a while I found I had bumped my emergency flasher switch on the center console halfway and in so doing disabled my directionals. As I put things on the console it made the directionals work or not work depending upon how I touched the switch but I never pushed the switch far enough to make the flashers actually go on. This is an outside shot but before you spend any money try switching the emerg. flashers on and off and see if that clears up the problem.
