Turn signal problems...
 

I have been getting this intermittent problem with my turn signals. I will turn the signal on (and it doesn't seem to make a difference left or right when it happens) and it will flash twice and then stop. I have to move the signal arm to off and then back to the direction I had it. The most recent time I encountered this it did it until I actually made my turn, then has been fine since (which has been 2 or 3 start-ups since). Is this a switch issue or something else?

It just seems to do this when it wants to. I will realize that I don't hear the ticking, and look down and see that nothing is happening. I haven't found a way to get it to do it anytime I want.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated here!

Try another flasher unit. Its a small cylindrical can in back of instrument cluster or from below between parking brake and steering column on most models.

In my haynes manual, it has nothing on the flasher that I can find. It only has how to remove the turn signal bulbs (yay). From pictures of the back of the cluster, the only thing that I can see that looks like anything that you described is a small black cube on the oil pressure, temp gauge, fuel gauge side. Is that it?

What do you been between parking brake and steering column? Those two aren't near eachother at all.

Not on the back of the instrument cluster, IN BACK of the instrument cluster (towards front of car). Maybe someone with a 190D can tell you exactly where. I only have 300s.

I should have been more specific: Between the parking brake foot pedal and steering column. However, in your 190D the flasher unit may be in a different place than than my 300s.

It is a metal can about 1 in diameter and 1 1/2 inch long. It has 2 metal prongs on the bottom that plug into a plastic carrier.

Ah see my car has the hand parking brake, that's why I was so confused on that. Sorry about that.

I will see if I can find the flasher behind the cluster. Thanks for the quick replies!

I didn't realize the 190 had a hand parking brake. I thought all MBs had the foot operated parking brake. Where is your parking brake handle located?

If you can't find flasher unit behind the instrument cluster, look under the dash in the vacinity of the steering column. You might have to remove some trim panels.

The hand brake is right under the arm rest. My only problem with looking BEHIND the cluster is that I can't get much clearence behind it. I don't want to start fooling with the oil line, that's my biggest fear with the cluster... an oil leak.

You won't get an oil leak if you use 2 wrenches to loosen the oil line: One to hold the nut on the gage and the other to turn the fitting. Put them back together the same way and it will not leak.

Don't run the engine while the oil line is separated or you will really have a leak.

Is the parking brake under the left or right side armrest?

It's more to the left. I can take a pic of it for ya.

Its not that important that I need a picture. It seems my old 190D (circa 1964) had a pull parking brake.

They must have copied that parking brake handle from Toyota. I have a old Celicia that is similar.

I looked at my old 190 today. It has a pull handle for the parking brake next to the steering column on the left side. I think the '68 220 was the first to have the foot operated parking brake.
