Vauxhall, a subsidiary of G.M. in the U.K is showing off a concept car called the Eco-Speedster running a 1.3 litre CDTI common -rail diesel engine in a lightweight sportscar body . The engine generates 112 hp.

The engine uses a multi-jet common-railfuel injection, four valves per cylinder and variable-geometry turbocharger.,meets Euro4 emission limits and is due for production in 2003.

The picture of it that I saw was pretty awesome...

Roll it into a showroom and I'll trade in my VW TDI -- that is, if GM can ever produce a decent-looking compact.

Dana B.,

Decent LOOKING compact? How about if they made one that would last 'til the water got hot? GM has a HORRIBLE record with compacts and their reliability.

The Corvair and the Vega were most definitely the biggest rip offs ever sold to the American car buyer. And they have yet to make anything any better in a car that small.

My $0.02,

Ouch!

Can't speak for the Vega, but I loved my 'Vair.

Unquestionably got a bad name for swing axle suspension problems prior to 1964, but after that suspension went to parallel control arm configuration that kept the rear wheels essentially vertical regardless of travel and body lean. Man that car could handle.

Build quality on my '68 was at least as good as any other domestic car of the time. (I know, I know, damning with faint praise), but that car made me very happy.

IMHO, people who understood the car were not ripped off at all.

Just a peek at the other side of the coin....
