heater only works on max?

The heat in my 83' 300TD only seems to work set on max. If I turn the temp. wheel any lower it blows cold air. Any ideas what it may be?

Truth is there are several things that could be wrong.. But perhaps if you pull the glove compartment out.. and look above it near the dash you will find a piece of foam pipe that should be hooking two pieces of plastic pipe together.. If the foam pipe is in bad shape or near gone.. go down to the local hardwear store and get some pipe insulation .. Kind of stuff you use on the pipes in the house.. with about a 3/4 inch ID.. Replace the old foam section with a piece of it.. .. It goes from the air intake on the dash to the fan and sucks air past the senser that tells the controls what temp it is in the car... If no air is passing it ,it will not know what temp it is and does act just like what you are saying... To remove the glove compartment.. take a small screw driver and remove the centers of the fastners holding the glove compantment in.. then the fastners.. drop the light into the compantment.. remove the compartment.. and the light from it .
Odds are it will do the job.. Could be other stuff.. but this will be the best place to start..

Woops... forgot to say.. If the intake is in the center of the dash it will be over the glove compartment.. If the intake is near the right speaker it will be beside the Glove compartment.. Odds are the foam is gone..

And like the one that a friend brought over last night.. If you put a dash cover over it.. it can not get air.. and will not work.. Never thought of that one until last night ...
