fuel sending unit plus aux water pump

Help! My fuel gauge used to be off for the first 1/2 of the tank (showing too much), but it was accurate for the second half. about a month ago the situation reversed itself with the gauge showing "empty" with 1/2 tankof fuel left. As advised on other posts, I took out the sending unit and cleaned off all the sludge making sure there is a good contact. it did not help. Is there another resistor somewher in the system, or can I test the gauge itself? Would a short circuit (say, with a chassis) result in this?

Aux water pump.

have a leak somewhere around it, but I can't tell if it's the pump or the hose. What would be other symptoms of bad/leaking pump? \
Thanx
