Vaccuum Central Locking
I have been all over my central locking system , looking for degraded rubber connections or chaffed hoses , but all looks fine .
The system is erratic in which door locks work , some lock , some unlock , some do neither . Can I put a little positive pressure in the line ( with a cycle pump ) to help me find whatever leak is there ? Any other thoughts ? Thanks .

Have you looked at the individual elements at the doors? Maybe it's the master vacuum 'switch', which should be in the driver's door.
Look at the trunk locking element and the fuel door locking element too. I found mine to be under the seat (the seatback locking element)

I've replaced the lines in two doors. They break in the door jam where they flex when the doors open.

I bought a used A/C vacuum pump and also hooked up a vacuum guage inline. You can then ck each door function for leaks. I have also replaced broken lines as they go thru the door.

Crude but effective...
I checked my door locks simply by cycling the door system while the motor was running and then checking each lock to see if it was working. Puch the master lock (drivers door) down with the engine making vacuum for you and then go around and push down all additionall locks. Once in the locked position try to lift the lock on each door. If one of them lifts easily it is the locking side of the diaphragm for that door lock that is leaking. Conversely, unlock the master lock and then try pushing down the door locks for each door. If one of them pushes down easily it is the unlocking side of that diaphragm that is bad. If all door locks act as they should then check the trunk and other mechanisms... A mity vac can come in really handy for this kind of work too.

Using an A/C vac pump is one heck of alot quiter than running your engine, recovers alot faster than the engine vacuum pump and allows you to "HEAR" any leaks. Besides, when the lock mechanisms are working properly and the linkages are not sticking and lubed, the door locks are supposed to lock or unlock easily no matter whether the doors are locked or not.

Dusty,
I would NOT put positive pressure on these locks, as they were designed to work with a VACUUM. You would perhaps blow all these valves apart. Motorhead, would the AC pump creat too much vacuum for these little vacuum valves??

240ED, The A/C vac pump is ok. I have a guage on it and i dis connect the main vac line to the car and connect the vac pump to it. I evacuate the system and close inline valve and watch the guage. The MBZ manuals show them using a vac pump. To ck individual doors, I find the junctions on the floor boards and test them individually. I only suggested this method because it saves you from running the car while trying to pinpoint a leak. You can get an old refrigerator cpmpressor and use it the same way. Just hook the car's vac system up to the suction side of the refer compressor. Hey, for the obvious one door not locking, the self test method works. When you have a leaky line or a questionable drivers door valve, the vac pump with a vac guage works the best. Chris

Motorhead...
I must have made a mistake in my phrasing.
You misunderstood my post. I meant that MY method was crude.. Please understand that no one here at least in my brief experience (I am a relative newbie) are used to having to be too cautious with our posts as it is generally understood that no one who visits this board regularly, would ever be judgemental or flame their fellow diesel MBers. Everyone has a different way of doing things and that is what makes this board great. All the different ideas and the "I learned from that" ideas and stories are, in my opinion, what causes me to come back again and again. Sorry for any confusion. My response was to the oringinal poster Dusty NZ and not directed towards your methods or comments. Happy New Year
