Anyone Take ASE Tests? - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I recently took three of the ASE tests just for grins and giggles.

I had the study guides for "Suspension & Steering" and "Brakes," but had no study guide for "Engine Repair." I made in the high 80's on the two for which I had Study Guides, but made over 95 on the one for which I had no Study Guide.

Seeing as how I haven't wrenched for pay in the last 30 years or so, I thought the tests were easy. What are others impressions of these tests?

I expect the Automatic Transmission test to be the most difficult for me, but I plan on getting through it.

Now that I have my certification on these three, I plan on taking the other five and getting my Master. I will probably never use my certification for a living, but with my industry going straight down hill, you never know what the future holds.

Once you have the ASE tests behind you, are there any MB specific tests or certification required of the MB dealer techs?

I started out just like you (taking one for fun). I now hold nine (8 for cars and underbody) and thought like you I may never need them, but I was laid-off about 18 months ago and during the time I was looking for work I was greatly comforted that if need be, I knew I could always find work with them.
Additionally, if you went to work at a garage, having the exams may get you a better starting position / wage.
Automatic Transmission was the hardest for me, I knew I wouldn't pass it, so I took a class at community college that was awesome. Before that class, transmission work was unbolt, send out, reinstall same.

I thought the sample test questions in the back of the test registration booklet were pretty easy, considering that I have never taken an automotive class.

I do not have any automotive work experience, so does that mean that I only get test results, instead of the pretty certificate to hang on the wall?

Where can you get information on these test: material to study,palce to take tests?

Yes, you have to have two years experience for the certification, but none for taking the tests.

I used experience from over 30 years ago, but it was valid, and they were happy with it.

I took all the medium/heavy duty truck tests plus the L2 electronic diesel engine test and passed all with 2 or 3 wrong for each test. The L2 test was fairly difficult. Passing all these got me a raise at work. All in all I was disappointed the tests were so easy.

No, there are no European (much less MB) specific ASE tests.
MB doesn't mention encouraging ASE testing, however at the dealership level, they do support ASE testing. Our dealership pays for ASE tests.

I guess I worded my question wrong. Are there any tests administered by MB? Is there any formal training administered by MB?

Yes, we receive alot of training as dealer techs. There are also training programs for post-tech school graduates with placement help, these are administered by UTI.
For most classes we are expected to pass pre and post tests.
