picture of 307d motorhome

Finally scanned a picture of my 307d motorhome. Thought someone might be interested in how the Brits build their Mercedes. It has the same engine as the 240d but no oil cooler, no AC, 5spd and geared much lower. Top speed 68-70mph.

Well man, give us the details! Where did you find this wonderful machine? How's it run? How many miles?

It has 126k. It drives very well once you get used to right hand drive. It gets about 25mpg which is not that great given the price of fuel in the UK. The cost to drive it is roughly the same as driving my Dodge in the US getting 8mpg. I found it on the internet, just outside of London. I bought it to tour Europe for a couple of years. I used it for a couple of weeks in January 2002, about 8 weeks in summer 2002 and we'll use it again for another 8 weeks this summer, after which I hope to sell it. Anyone interested? $1800. I have it stored on a farm just outside of Exeter. I was very nervous when I first went over to the UK to pick it up. It was the first vehicle I bought sight unseen and the previous owner had already moved to Spain. My instructions were to go to a newsagent shop in a small town just east of London and he would have the keys and paperwork. I was quite relieved when the keys were there and the vehicle parked just a few miles down the road.
I had to replace the waterpump on it but that's the only problem I've had with it (apart from having to bleed the clutch system when I first picked it up) The waterpump was quite different than the ones on a 240d because the fan clutch attachment was via a large central bolt.
For touring Europe it's hard to beat. Most major cities have campgrounds either right in town or close enough to jump on public transportion. It's been a kick so far.

Cool, but do you ever get out of 1st or 2nd gear on hills? The acceleration must be something on the order of "glacial" RT

Top speed in first is about 8mph. I can do most steep hills in 3rd. There has only been a couple of times when I had to go down to 3rd on a motorway hill. It's quite surprising how peppy the acceleration is. I have no complaints about it believe it or not. On the flat, I often start out in 2nd. I had my worries before I bought it but I wouldn't think twice about buying another to tour Europe. It would be hopeless here in Colorado, given the altitude and big hills but over there, no problem.

I live in Colorado. It is stored in Exeter, UK. I'm a teacher so I use it during vacations.

Good show! The right hand drive is probably handy on the autobahn. That way you can get a good look at all the Germans that are shaking their fist at you while passing you on the right!

Neat ride,
