1981 Mercedes 240D stick shift pattern
Dear friends,
Could someone tell me what the stick shift pattern for a 1981 Mercedes 240D with manual transmission is? Thank you very much. Eric |

"up" , towards you and forward is reverse...... By "up" I mean pulling straight up on the shift lever, like you were pulling it from the console - straight up while guiding the lever towards you and then forward.
Otherwise, 1-4 is the basic "H" patern....... and yes, it makes a difference if you follow the dots on the speedometer that tell you when to shift at what speeds. Most people think they are winding out the engine when they are not. I think 2nd to 3rd is at 38 mph, etc... |

PEH, very cute...
Janko, So you are saying you do not have to pull up on your gearshift knob in order to put your car into reverse ? |

yes, sir. that is correct. generally go to the 3rd gear detent then one over for first. very easy to engage reverse.

The mechanism which is not engaging your lockout pin can probably be accessed by just removing the shifter boot...
I suggest you take that off... and use a penetrant, not WD40, to spray any springs and holes on the shaft of the shifter.... moving it up and down in the process... if that does not work,, report same back to us.... good luck.... |

Woah!!!!!!!!
This is new fricken news to me! I always felt play when I pulled my shifter up, but wondered why the hell it was there, and also wondered why I sometimes went into first before going into reverse to have it mesh nicely. Well....now I have reverse lockout! I'd been fighting the car the entire damn time! My father never told me these things when teaching my to drive a standard!
