Should I or shouldn't I?? 240d manual trans.
I was at the pick and pull junkyard today. There was an early 80's 240d with a standard transmission. Do you think it's worth pulling the transmission, pedals, hydraulics etc to keep to use as a conversion should the tranny go out in one of my 300d's.
How long do you think it would take to pull the tranny? It may be possible to pull the engine and tranny together but the car had been hit hard in the front so it might have to come out from below. Transmission would cost $67. How hard is it to remove the pedals and hydaulics?

Ha ha! Have you removed the pedals? Is is just a few bolts, or a headache?

Just pull it!
Kerry,
Pull the whole setup. The pewals have four nuts up under the dash plus a pin holding the master cylinder bar. The tranny can best be pulled by itself and since it's in a 240D the top two bellhousing bolt are snap to get out. Make sure to keep all the steel tubing and the rubber hose connecting them. Go ahead and do it!! Ben

If you search the "conversion" threads... I think someone lately has said they come out easily... and if the car you have was offered with manual trans that that mounting hardware it there to put then to.... might be time to crawl upside down into your drivers side foot space and look up with a flashlight.... if you study the drawings for what it fits to ( or look closely on your parts car ) it may be easier to spot the brackets...
If you take all the associated stuff out and offer it to the forum I expect you can get between $500 and $700 for it.. ( maybe more )... something to think about.... So even if they will not go into YOUR car... they may be worth pulling at the price you were quoted for the trans.... One thought.. make a deal for all the stuff that goes with it first... then ask if they will turn the car on its side... talk about easy access... LOL, Ben posted while I was composing... Ben, what about whether it will ' bolt' into his car ? |

I'd be interested in the crankshaft if the engine wasn't damaged in the wreck.

Did you buy the engine and trans?

No. If I can find time to get back there before they crush it, I plan to buy the transmission.

Will it bolt in?
leathermang,
Yes, all the 240D components will bolt right into place of the 300D or other 240D components that one removes to make the conversion. These Germans are nothing if not methodical. Ben

Cool thing about removing junk-yard parts..... just bring your own torch - or bribe the junky to use his torch - and cut the muffler out of the way, cut the driveshaft behind couplings, cut the undercarriage where tranny mount bolts attach, cut sheetmetal body behind the pedal assembly, etc.....

Ridge:
While you are at it, could you answer the following: I have a chance to get my hands on a complete 300D Euro 5 speed. The engine might be blown but I'm getting it for $200 and it has new tires. I figure the tires are worth the $200 and everything else is a bonus. Will that tranny swap neatly with my 83D-T which is flaring? Don

I did an auto->manual conversion on a W115 chassis about 10 years ago. It was straightforward and took about 1.5 days. You are going to need the flywheel from the manual transmission car - the automatic flex plate will not work with the manual transmission. Everything else just bolted right up - all the necessary holes for the pedals, different transmission mounts ect ect were already present in my automatic transmission car. It was a pure bolt in operation. I suspect the W123 chassis would be the same but I've never done a conversion on a W123

Well, I had a few hours today, so I decided I should. It took me about 3 hours to get everything out by unbolting (no torching). A lot of that time was spent figuring out how to do it since I've never done it before. Figuring out how to get the pedals out was time consuming since it is hard to see up there. Finally took out the instrument cluster (bought it also). Total cost for trans, shifter, pedals, master cylinder, slave cylinder and all lines--$81.45.
Also bought the cruise control amp. It is stamped: For manual transmission. What's the difference between them. My current amp is acting up, can I switch the manual one in place of an auto? The best part was that a friend of mine had given me an old Paco Pad camping mattress.for replacing his master cyclinder Thick foam, heavy vinyl, self-inflating. Boy was that a comfortable 'creeper' on the dirt.
