Mileage increasing??

It seems that lately my mileage has been getting better and better. I floor it all the time, driving 'inefficiently' and yet I still get well over 30 mpg and it is mostly stop and go driving. Does driving hard get everything all cleaned out?

aaah, the good old 'Italian tuneup'

Works for some, not for others, but if you dont drive only highway miles at reasonably hgh speeds, my bet is theres carbon and junk effecting your engine's operation, and soem good hard running will indeed help.
Even if you do drive a lot of highway, I had the 300D up to 85-90 for about an hour while down in TN, and it definitely drove with more power and pep than before.

My uncle purchased one of the first VW's when they came out. He told everyone at work about this car and the fantasic mileage it was suppose to get.

Everyday, fellow workers popped the trunk and added about 1/2 a gallon of gas. My uncle was going insane think he found a new god, hundreds of miles driven and no fuel having been used.

Part 2 was, they began to remove a gallon per day exactly one month after he took delivery.

Have any friends?

It could be due to the phase in of summer Diesel fuel. Winter blends do not contain as much heat content - I've noticed a drop off of 2 MPG or so when using winter fuels.

Yes I have thought about this. I did have exactly as you described last year, but this mileage is higher than I've ever seen it. I don't know. Maybe they just have a really good tank of diesel up at the station, their price is the lowest around, and it changes the most often. The exxon never changes prices, it finally dropped from 1.699 (sat there for at least 2 months) and is now at 1.599. I paid 1.389 this last fill up when I calculated 32 mpg. 8.00 even @ 1.389/gal w/ 184 miles on the trip odo which is reset before start up at the station after filling.

I've observed with my 300D mileage as high as 32 mpg but only if I run the tank from full to about 450 miles on the trip odo. My fuel guage is funky so I just fill up at 450 or so and it calculates out to the 32 or so. I used to fill at 350 and the mileage was only 26/27. I'm guessing the weight of the fuel has some effect. I drive 100 miles a day at as near warp speed as I can so the engine is prety clean. The summer fuel is much better too. The car just plain runs better than in the depths of winter. Even so, winter the worst I saw was 26 mpg. OTOH have no idea if my odo is accurate, but it seems OK.
