Who runs Evans NPG coolant?

Someone on this board runs Evans NPG coolant but I can't remember who..... Hopefully you will see this post!! I would like to know what modifications, if any, you had to make to use it. How did you "burp" or get all the air out of the cooling system? Also, how exactly you purged all the water from the system. My curiousity has me considering converting my 300D to the NPG+ I like the idea of a no-pressure, no maintenance cooling system. Thanks much, RT

It is PEH

Here is the link. Do a search on Evans coolant for more links.

MB coolant

I very recently replaced the green stuff with the orange MB coolant. The motor is running a few degrees cooler and have had no problems with system burps or air in the system. I believe that one should keep and maintain the vehicle as close as possible to the manufacturers specs as posssible. A no pressure, no maintenance cooling system seems fictional to me.

RW,

I use Evans NPG+ coolant in my 300SD and 300SDL. I haven't driven the 300SDL much since I put NPG+ in but I drove the 300SD across the country last year with the radiator cap loose with no boiling or loss of coolant. It ran a little hotter on the up hills in the Rocky mountains but cooled to normal as soon as I got to a down hill.

No modifications were made other than leaving the radiator cap loose.

To purge the water from the system, I let the drain plugs open and ran a hair dryer connected to the fill hole in the expansion tank for a couple of days. NOTE, a lower wattage dryer (approx 500w) or the low range should be used as a higher power dryer might overheat due to the restriction in the air flow. I also pulled off the heater hoses and connected the dryer to blow air thru the heater core to dry it. I did the drying after I flushed the system repeatedly and had virtually only water in it.

A 300SD (5cyl) fills easily. Just pour in the Evans until its full. The 300SDL (6cyl) is more difficult to fill. I poured in as much NPG+ as it would take and then drove it around until it got hot and the level in the expansion tank went down and added some more. I think I had to do this a couple of times until the level remained the at the full line.

I agree with thebern that no cooling system is completely maint free, but NPG+ is the closest thing to it. And to me the no pressure system with the high boiling point and no corrosion that water causes is a hugh advantage and worth the extra cost of the NPG+coolant.

Thanks PEH,
I had heard that I could flush the system multiple times with RV antifreeze or Sierra coolant full strength and then install the Evans but the water flush then hairdryer will work too. I agree that no cooling system is completely maintenence free. I do however think that the MB constant pressure cooling system puts an awful lot of strain on a 19year old cooling system with lots of expensive parts that are getting tired. I see no reason not to use a new technology IF it provides the same cooling, reduced cost and time in upkeep and less stress on the system. Why is there such resistance to new ideas? Just because it wasn't invented 20yrs ago and installed by MB doesn't mean it won't work, be harmful, waste money or cause you to break out in hives. Jeez, its really a wonder we ever learned to fly not to mention land on the moon. RT
