vw/audi tdi engines. anyone know about these?

http://boston.craigslist.org/car/137231703.html

i've always wondered about an audi wagon (awd) with a diesel engine so i could run with veggie. 5k is a bit out of my league unless i found the car for a dollar. anyone ever hear of these guys, or know of the ability to drop these engines in?

looks like a VE TDI engine, older TDI from a 2003-below VW or Audi. You can tweak those lil engines to get 200lbs tq! And those are known to get up to 50+mpg with a manual tranny.

EDIT: and you cant put these in 4WD audi's you would have to get a later PD TDI engine from say a passat 4motion(dont exist in US) the more powerful 2.0T engines. I think in your case it would be easier to go to guatemala and buy one there, just get it shipped over to the US and work out the paperwork. I dont think you could easily just slap a 1.9T in a 4WD audi. Maybe a 1.8T gasser FWD audi but not a 4WD

There's a place near Detroit called "The Parts Place" that has these for sale also, I remember the price being around $3500. Probably a Mexican or Brazilian-made engine, all mechanical injection. I'm getting ready to put one in a Vanagon Syncro, a drop-in kit is available. I will be needing much taller differentials front and rear, currently we have a VR6 converted Syncro which screams, RPM limited to 98mph, needs taller gears.

I can't imagine that sticking the little TDi engine in place of a V6 or I5 audi engine would be that difficult, but would suggest a mechanical engine to keep the wiring and expenses to a manageable amount as resale probably won't support the conversion costs (nor will fuel savings unless you keep it for a very long time).

i appreciate it

the other day my wife and i went out to breakfast and there was a table of 6 behind us. 6 guys, all in their 60's, sucking sdown their coffee and talking sports, politics, etc. they all referred to each other as mayor, captain, governor, etc, and it was always a different one each time. my wife hoped that i had a group like that when i was 60.

sometimes i feel like this place is a little like that. i send out a question or a comment, and it gets answered pretty quickly and friendly-like.

thanks.
