Any 190 D Intelligence out there?

I have the opportunity this evening to view/drive a 85 190D. Brought back to Ft Hood by soldier who has since (again) been delployed to Iraq. Anyways (his) wife said it has to go (she has a C180 Esprit ATP-Tour what ever that looks like.

The 190 has a bunch of KM's on the clock +450. Anything special I should be on the look out for on this 4 cyl?

Howdy,

I drive a 190D 2.2 ('84) for a daily driver. Mine has the manual tranny. I can't think of anything engine-wise offhand to look for. On mine, the diesel return lines were shot, so it started leaking diesel as soon as I started driving it. But this is a 20 minute fix, so it isn't too big a deal if they do look unmaintained.

You might look at the fuses. These should be on the drivers side in the engine bay under the hood hinge. If any are burnt, that could be an indication of problems. On my car, I can't keep fan clutch fuses in, it keeps burning them up. I'm going to replace it in a couple of weeks, but the indicator would be burnt fuses.

A HVAC fan could also be burning fuses.

My brakes were also shot when I bought the car. Might look at the fluid or for leaks. If a manual, the clutch also works off the brake resivoir. If leaking fluid, that might be where it's going if not the brakes.

The OM601's should idle reasonably well, but if you are use to a gasser, it might seem too rough. They aren't exactly fast, so with the A/C on, you might feel as though something is wrong.

You might want to take the cover off the black relay on the driver side inner fender. This is the glowplug relay. It has an 80 amp or so copper fusible link you could check for discoloration.

190D

is it a manual or auto ? If its an Automatic find out if its the second one . They usually last 250 odd kmi, my wifes one is slipping and about to go.
The engine itself is bulletproof. 300+ kmi is easy.
Water pump - check that the aux pump works, heat is a bad thing for this block/head combo. As long as the cooling system works and it has no problem glowing and starting buy it.

Thanks

73MB280SEL and grimgaunt You both had some "right on" comments. The a/c is inop and this is the 2nd tranny in the girl (glad I asked). I think you would describe this car as "road hard and put away wet". Body, interior are nice just dirty. It does start, run and drive decent. The under the hood was depressing and that just me - keep my stuff spic and span. Have some leaks from unidentified origins. Going to run a pencil for the worst possible senario of repairs and go from their. Thanks again

John

Word to the wise: Might want to check the compression on this thing. My daughter got hers hot and cooked the rings. It started great in the summer, but wouldn't start in winter even with the block heater plugged in all night.

Just my .02
