Shut off problems with 300td
I have a situation for all you knowledgeable gentlemen out there... my husband is working (long distance from me) on an 82 300TD wagon. Everything was working ok until just recently when he found that it won't shut off with the key. He says that all the vacuum lines appear to be hooked up, if he disconnects a supply line and holds his thumb over it, he doesn't feel any vacuum. All the other vacuum run systems including the windows are still working fine.
Where else should we be looking at to tell what the problem is stemming from? Please understand that we don't have a manual to look at so any info you can pass along on where to look or what to try is greatly appreciated. |

sounds like
you need a vacuum shut off valve.. there should be a red stop button right above the injection pump to manually turn off the car at least there is one in my 1990 and 192 diesels

Yeah, use the manual stop until he gets home and then he can debug it at home.

agree troubleshoot at home, in meantime he can shut off via the red shutoff on the throttle linkage. if there is no vacuum supply it could mean a failing vac pump. if brakes still work ok then drive home. windows are electric not vacuum controlled.
keep us posted.

Welcome aboard Dot.
The windows don't have anything to do with the vacuum system. The door locks do. Do the door locks work? If they do then you have vacuum where you are supposed to have it. Look around real well at the firewall adjacent to the brake booster (the big round thing located on the firewall on the drivers side). Next to it you will see a bunch of vacuum lines going through the firewall. The brown ones are for the shut off. The yellow ones are for the door locks. Make sure everything is secure and in place. If you find the brown vacuum line coming into the back of the injection pump between the pump and the oil filter housing then you have found the actual vacuum line that pulls in the shut off valve. You need to try to test and see if you have vacuum on this line when you turn the key off. If you do then it is the actual shutoff valve itself. If you don't then you have a vacuum leak/issue somewhere else. Get hubby to purchase a MityVac if he does not already own one. If hubby ends up having to replace the shut off valve MAKE SURE one of ya'll come here (or do a search) and ask alot of questions concerning how it goes back in. It is pretty easy to replace BUT if improperly installed can cause some SERIOUS runaway issues with the engine.

yes, get the mity-vac. They are cheap and invaluable. I just got one for $26 at Auto Zone - the shut off valve was the culprit on my car. -Andy
