rubber doughnuts in the shift linkage
My third gear in my 4 spd 300d felt clunky....now I see the small
rubber 'doughtnut' between the linkage arm and the shifter is missing. Is there anything to be aware of in replacing these? |

Easy job and cheap. Replace them all while you're there.

The most difficult thing is getting the plastic/rubber bushing into it's hole. Someone suggested putting the bushing into hot water to soften it up a little. I highly recommend the hot water. Other than that its simple.

i agree. did the deed on my 240d in just a few minutes. work one at a time so as not to confuse things. you may find that the shift rods get a little 'out of sync' and as a result the shifter won't move. merely move the shifter rods back and forth and sync will be re-established. good luck.

The "heating the bushings" thing is for automatic transmissions. For the manual transmissions, it's really a simple operation. And to keep the shift rods from getting "out of synch," you stick a rod (screwdriver) through the holes that are there to line everything up.
