Self Leveling Pump Help! 85 300TDT
I'm on my 2nd pump on my 85 wagon. My mechanic can't seem to get it right. I'm leaking hydraulic fluid from where the pump meets the block. This will be the 3rd gasket set. Anyone with any experience replacing these pumps? Thanks.. PS I'm going broke refilling that expensive fluid!!!

What brand gasket are you using... ?
And you need to tell us exactly what procedure you are using when installing it... sometimes what is not mentioned is the most important item.... At some point you should not be paying for the fluid after it does not seal.... unless you are the one actually doing it... What are the 'qualifications' of your mechanic ? |

My main mechanic is in Bulgaria right now consuming 25cent beers, so I'm relying on a mechanic with no real mercedes experience. I purchase 3 items from MB. The paper gasket, a rubber o ring and another type of ceramic gasket. If I new more about the procedure I'd probably attempt it myself.

Well... with that little info all I can offer is this...
1. I never trust paper gaskets..... I put a thin ( wiped on with my finger ) FILM of RTV ( RED GTE myself, or locktite, etc) and let them cure over night before using. 2. cleanlyness is next to Godlyness....or at least Sealingness. 3. most leaks are due to over torqueing bolts... use the factory guidelines.. but be sure you are dealing with clean threads so the are close to accurate on the guage readings... 4.do like you are supposed to do with wheels , etc... go back and forth on the bolts as they are tightened incrementally... 5.just before putting the paper gaskit on I smear RTV onto the metal it is going to fit against and another film on the gasket and install immediately. 6. the metal it is going to be against should be totally clean... a paper towel with lacquer thinner or Klix88 wax and silicone remover should come off CLEAN... completley clean, no smudges... it takes a lot of cleaning to get it this way.. but how much does that fluid cost... LOL.. I know , I used to have a wagon... Just think about what I could have done if I had had specifics to address ? LOLOLOLOL |

At 25cents a beer, it will probably be awhile before your mechanic runs out of money. Might want to look around a bit for a knowledgable replacement. Good luck!
