Towing a 91 300D - on a Dolly - Driveshaft ?

Hello, 1991 300D W124

Does anyone know if the design of the transmission would make it adviseable to drop the driveshaft to avoid the unlubricated trans being driven by the drive wheels while being towed on a dolly ? I was always under the impression that this was adviseable regardless of make of vehicle but hoping to avoid this if possible. Any input appreciated.

Thankyou

They ditched the rear pump in '92 or something. Before that the driver's manual said up to 30 miles or so, after it said don't.

unless you keep it under 25mph, you need to pull the shaft, and I'm pretty sure ANYTIME you lift the front of the vehicle for towing, you need to pull the driveshaft.

I have always wondered about simply towing it backwards with the rear wheels off the ground.

not allowed by the dolly manufacturers, due to instabilities.
minor steering sway will be amplified, and vehicle can easily flip.

That would be bad.

You do need to be careful.

I towed a 380SL backwards for 35 miles and kept it under 40 mph and it was fine.

Did the same for 2 x different 240D cars on the way to repair shops and as long as I was under 45 mph, no problemo.

I will probably abandon this practice on vehicles with auto transmission when I get a full-sized trailer. But in the meantime, I do it at slow speeds.
