Airbags in 300D's....When did they Start?
Hi,
What year did the 300D's and SD's start having Air Bags...or other important safety features built in? Thanks, Linda |

My old '85 Sd had ABS and I think a drivers side airbag was an option in that year(which mine did not have)
I think '87 was the first year the 300D had an airbag as well as ABS some 90 and newer D's and SDL's even had passenger side airbags Warren 1992 300SD 168K Columbus Ohio |

MB claimed that first gen airbags have a life of 10 years then extended it to 15 years. That being the case, I would not count on an original 82-85, 87 300D, 81-85 300SD or 86-87 300SDL airbag to save my life if push came to shove. I'd like to see statistics on how many 15-year old MB airbags deploy when they should.
I believe replacement airbags are in the neighborhood of $2000. I don't know if the sensors and switchgear also have limited lives. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

I was working at a Chevrolet dealer in 1969 when a recently sold Caprice came back with front end damage and its airbag deployed. The earliest airbag I am familiar with.

As long as the SRS light in the car is off, wouldn't it be safe to assume all is well with the airbag system? I'm wondering because my 1987 300D seems to have a functional SRS and I cannot imagine having to spend $2000 to renew it!

I think there's a sticker in the glove box stating to have the airbag replaced at a certain time. If you went back in 1997, you'd have gotten a 5 year extension.
I don't know how airbags work. I don't know what exactly degrades over time. I don't know what kind of POST the SRS system does. Dang, I'm pretty dumb Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

In 1984, the SRS system (ETR's and drivers side airbag) was an option on the W126.
In 1985, ETR's became standard equipment on the 107, 123, 126, and 201, except model 123.153. I know the airbag was available in a 107 chassis, so I am kind of assuming at this point that ETR's were standard and the airbag was an option on the 107 and 126 in 1985. In 1986 forward, all Mercedes came standard with dual front ETR's and drivers side airbag. In 1988 they "unitized" the SRS control unit to include the crash sensor, energy accumulator, and voltage converter in a single housing. In 1989, passenger side airbag became standard on 126.035, 039 and 045, and optional on 124, 126.024 and 025. What they are concerned with on older airbags is degradation of the airbag cloth. Gilly |

Thanks Gilly....
That makes sense to me and I can see MB's concern about the cloth. I guess the early gen airbags may degrade over time.
