This is a common problem. Do a search on this forum. There are many posts on the reapir. Mine took me less than an hour to repair.

Pull the speedo out and send it to Steve Brotherton at Continental imports

http://www.continentalimports.com/ci_home.html

they can or used to rebuild them and can give you a couple day turn around. He is listed on this site as Stevebfl PM him and verify they still work on the VDO gauges.

Could be as simple as the speedometer cable falling off the transmission tailhousing after 17+ years of vibrations and conditions.

Try this http://instrument.mbzarticles.org/odo/ I use small bolt cutters to "nick" the shaft, needless to say to much squezzen is to be avoided. Just take your time, its not a hard job.
