1980 300SD...What's it worth?

I am going to look at a 1980 300SD tomorrow morning. The car has 292,000 miles, 2nd owner. It is mechanically sound(according to owner) but it needs some cosmetics---paint, interior work. Good tires, newly rebuilt front-end

What's she worth?

I wouldn't sell mine for less than $8000.

I would pay up to $4200 if it was perfect. $1500 seems average for an 80 SD when I was looking for a MB diesel.

Be sure to pull up the floor mats and carpet and inspect the floor pans. These cars often leak and rust out the floor pans. The rear floor pan area is lower than the front, so rust often starts there first.

Not at all an impossible thing to fix, but if you do find rust I think you can get the price knocked down to $500.

Don't forget this car has the dreaded $900 climate control servo. Search for "ACC servo" if you need more info.

Items to look for which would impact the price, RUST anywhere (as mentioned above), window seals (front & rear), bad horsehair pads in the seats (my bet is the rear seat pads are gone and perhaps the MB-Tex material may be damaged as a result), and the ACC servo. One other potential problem area would be the sunroof, but since this is a 1980 W116 it likely does not have a sunroof. Good luck. Keep us posted.

800 Dollar Car

You will get a lot of advice on here but if it is a 116 and runs decent and most of the car works then 800 is a good price...You can always get your money back by parting it out...Jim

Drove It Today!

Needs painting- clearcoat has come off top surfaces- did these cars have cc from the factory? Other than paint the body is very straight!

NO RUST IN FLOOR, Front or rear!

ACC servo is shot!

Sunroof works!

Cruise doesn't work!

Runs smooth and shifts flawlessly! So much different than my 240D

Back seat-backs are empty of filler (horse hair)

New tires!

New Vacuum Pump!

New power window motors up front!

It fired up almost immediately (I'm sure it needs the valves adjusted)
Fires up better than my 240D

No smoke at idle!

No smoke detected during road test!

Engine bay needs a good cleaning.

Well, how does it sound?

Buy It

The car sounds wonderfull...BUY IT...cruise control has always been a problem...climate control servos are out there..search in EBAY-MB Parts...I have one in a 116 that I am parting out..Try some rubbing compound and a buffer on the paint...it can make faded paint look almost new...Be carefull on edges and corners as it will quicky remove the paint...Good luck...Jim

With the servo, if everything works as it should except it just isn't blowing hot air I know of a way to fix it. After the servo has been removed there are like 3 small holes in the bottom. They will be slightly larger than a spray straw that would be on wd-40 for example. Spray carb cleaner in there then lots of wd-40. Try and get as much of the stuff out and you may be surprised when you plug it back in.
My mechanic told me to do that and it fixed mine. There are gears in there and they can sieze over time. Let me know if this works for you or if you need further instructions.
Thanks
David

Dear oilslick:

$800 is a very good price for such a mechanically sound W116 300SD. Grab it ASAP before someone else steals it from you.

Best regards,

Eric
