I cannot give you any information but, I can't stand seeing your post go unanswered either. I think you are a brave man for trying this without a manual! I wish there was something I could do to help you out!

Good luck!

I can't say much either but I wish you the best- please keep us updated.

Did you check out the (usually useless) W123 Haynes manual? There seems to be a pretty useful section on manual transmission rebuilding-I think it may help you.

Carrameow,

Have you published this web page somewhere else? The link doesn't work anymore.

I have an '83 tranny downstairs in pieces and just need to know where one of the synchro rings (that is in pieces at the bottom of the tranny case!) goes.

The manuals I have are all for the older trans (716.100?) and this is like yours (716.210).

Pics of your completed mainshaft layout is all I need. Since the part is completely destroyed, I'm not sure where to replace the new one (it appears to need the 3/4 synchro?)

Thanks for any help.

at home, and I will contact you tonite, and try to HELP YOU.. anyway a lot of it lives in my mind....

This is what I found in the case bottom:

Here's pics of the main upon removal (synchro's and rings are very different from the earlier trans):

This is where I "suspect" the culprit came from:

The part number for the Synchro is

All synchro's share the same part number--124 262 0034. The same part number applies to 1, 2 3 & 4 th Gear synchro. Your 1st gear synchro is the one in pieces.
The parts have to come from a GOOD dealer. Try to find an older counter person who has worked with the system for some years.

They have to be ordered from Germany, or at the least, a regional center, like Baltimore. The synchro should take 1 week.

I AM REALLY SORRY I COULDNT GET TO YOU SOONER.

The diagram should help.

Please contact me if you need any HELP whatsoever, I'm on the NET twice a day usually,

GOOD LUCK

Carrameow,

Thanks a million! This is just what I needed. The tranny would grind only when going into 4th gear, so I assume it's the 4th synchro? Anyway, your pics confirm my suspicions on where and what's missing.

There's a guy at a new stealer who is a 123 guy, I'll see what he can do tomorrow.

Will keep you up to date on how this turns out. While I'm waiting for parts, I'll take everything else down and clean and moly coat it.

Carrameow 07-07-2004 08:28 AM

Yeah I always did get the gears mixed up...

The bigger gears are Low gears 1 and 2 and the smaller gears are High Gears 3 and 4. Anyway, it doesnt make much difference, it all makes sense when you put it back together.
