Am I crazy or is the other guy? ('93 w123?)
I use biodiesel in my '85 300D, and am out of the habit of visiting a filling station. So, when I pulled in the other day (to wash the windows...) and met a very nice looking 300D I was excited. It was a non-turbo, and when I spoke with the owner, he said that it was a 1993 model. I replied, "nineteen NINETY three? Really?" and he said yes, that it was a grey market european car.
I'd never heard of such a thing, as this was clearly a w123 300D non turbo. It DID look nice, but basically just like mine. Did MB make this car in 1993 and not send them to the US? Or am I right to think this guy was deluding himself...?? Who is nuts? Thanks Kevin

Thanks
You never know... They were still making old VW beetles in mexico up until a few years ago...
Thanks for the confirmation of my sanity. I wonder if the DMV has it registered as a '93? It has to be an 83... but he had this dismissive look when I told him mine was an 85, as though it were a fossil or something. wierdo. cheers, Kevin

It's not impossible. For instance, 1970's style MB vans are being manufactured in Iran and Gurkha has given us links to 80's style MB vans currently being mfg'd in India. It's within the range of the possible that 123's are still being made somewhere on the globe.

Somewhere around the globe, possibly. But I don't know about anywhere in Europe. The nut with the "1993" W123 said it was a grey market European car.

Maybe it came into the US in 93 and somehow got tagged as a 93.

To get around sanctions, MB was building/assembling cars in South Africa during the 70s and 80s. BMW and VW were doing it too. But those models were kept current, as are the MBs being assembled in India, Brazil and other countries today.
So you'd be hard put to find an oddball described above, (referring to the owner) since such people cannot afford MBs in third world countries... God bless the USA!! By the way, how does one convert a car to use Waste Vegetable Oil? |

I've read that there are 1994 W126s out in South Africa. I would like to see a 1994 W126. I don't think it would be any different from the 91 euro W126s, but I'd just like to see it. Just think, while the oldest W126s are 24 years old, the youngest are only 9 years old.

Africanized Benzes
Actually Mercedes manufactured cars in South Africa since the 1950's when they started with the Pontons.
And it's certainly not true that nobody in the third world can afford them. In fact, there are many old Benzes beating their way around various parts of Africa, South America and Asia. And a slightly off topic fact. The South African army during the "apartheid years" used Mercedes Benz Unimog's (I've heard a figure as high as six thousand) as the basis for their troop carriers, knows as "Buffels". In english that'd be "Buffaloes" - Peter.
