Hi gatliffe, have you checked your glow plugs for continuity ? If the #1 gp is bad it may affect them all. Check the ground also , it's on the passenger side near the headlight. Check the pin and socket condition where it plugs into the relay , corrosion at any of these may affect the gp's. Good luck and welcome to the board.

gatliffe,

There is a fuse in the GP relay. Check that, it could have a hair line crack.

Also, listen to the GP relay when key is turned to the run position. The relay should click. If it doesn't click, either there is no electricticity getting to the relay or the relay is bad.

Are you sure they are parallel and not series?

Either way, the most likely explaination is a blown (or more likely cracked) strip fuse on the relay. Small piece of aluminum about 3/4" long, 1/4" wide held down by two thumbscrews. Poke it, if it bends, it's cracked and you will have no current to the plugs even if the relay operates.

Hopefully it's just the fuse.......

but if it isn't then 16 ohms is too much resistance for the pencil type of glow plugs. One dead gp should still allow it to start , although it'll miss for a few seconds. The manual says the resistance should be less than 1 ohm at 68*F (20*C) at each gp,measured from the connector at the relay.

Gatlif,

Resistance of parallel GP should be lass than one ohm, usually about 0.5 ohms. Are you using the lowest scale on your meter?

If one GP reads infinite resistance it is NG, or possibly the wire going to it is broken or has a bad conection. Are you connecting your ohmeter thru the connector removed from the relay?. If you don't remove the connector, you will get parallel readings which are not accurate.

You can test GP by connecting them accross battery and observing them to see if they glow bright orange in a few seconds. Note: GP must be removed for this test.

How about rigging a #10 or bigger wire from the GPs so a helper could hold it on the battery for the start up? How hard would that be to rig up for an "emergency start up ?

Gatliff,

I have been away for about a month. Have you solved your problem?
