bad engine mounts or shocks?
Lately I have been noticing that when starting and stopping the engine in my 123 TD, the engine shakes the car. Once started everything is smooth. I have been thinking it is the engine shocks because bad mounts would cause the engine to also shake at idle. I just want to get a general consensus (sp) before I spend $44 a piece for engine shocks.

I changed the engine mounts and it made a huge difference, much smoother. Chasing a vibration at idle I changed the engine shocks. Noticeably smoother but not as great a change as the mounts. Upon inspection, the shocks appeared in pretty good shape but I put the new ones in anyway. I still have the old ones and you can have them if yours are totally shot. RT

My 2 cents
My 1977 300D only has one engine shock, but I replaced it prior to replacing my motor mounts. I do know this.......a good engine shock will not compensate for bad motor mounts. With good motor mounts, I can't imagine that back engine shock(s) would make a huge difference,,,,,but I've been wrong before.
JCD PS,,,,you must be in the US.....hope all is well and look forward to the next NJ meet. JCD |
